Environmental attorney Sanders says US EPA awarded $1.2 million in Brownfields grants to five communities in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

In April 2010, US EPA awarded several communities in Kentucky with $1.2 million in brownfields grants to help revitalize former industrial and commercial sites, turning them from problem properties to productive community use. Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The communities in Kentucky receiving brownfields assessment grants include:

· City of Crab Orchard – $200,000 cleanup grants
· Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government – $200,000 assessment grants
· City of Newport – $200,000 assessment grants
· Northern Kentucky Area Development District – $200,000 assessment grants
· City of Owensboro – $400,000 assessment grants
