Kentucky environmental attorney Sanders says GAO released new report on surface mining in Kentucky and West Virginia.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office issued a report on mountaintop removal coal mining and surface mining in general. The GAO report can be found at this link

According to GAO’s report, 44% of the land under a surface mining permit is concentrated in just three counties in Kentucky. The counties are Perry, Pike and Knott.

Kentucky has 420,900 acres in the mountainous eastern part of the state under an open permit as of July 2008. The much flatter western part of Kentucky has an additional 55,300 acres under open surface mining permits.  In total, Kentucky has a whopping 476,200 acres under open surface mining permits.
