Are new transmission lines really for new energy sources?

NPR published an interactive map on the internet that shows the location of current and proposed electrical transmission lines in the United States, as well as current power plants, solar and wind power potential and the transmission lines for those.  Piedmont Environmental Council has taken NPR’s map one step further and published a supplemental map showing how the coal industry might use transmission lines rather than for wind energy.
