Free Fishing Weekend and Youth Fishing Derby

June 6-7, 2009

Every year Kentucky offers free fishing days the first weekend in June. No license is required for residents or non-residents to fish in any Kentucky waters, but all fishing regulations remain in effect. The free fishing days are a great time to get some friends together.

The Fishing Derby is June 6. This is a fun day for youth ages 15 and under. A cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and Barren River Lake State Resort Park provides youth an opportunity to learn about fishing.  The park provides the poles (or you can bring your own) the bait and drinking water.

Activities begin at 9 a.m. with a 30 minute Leave No Trace for Fishing Awareness Seminar and games.  Fishing will begin at 9:30 and will continue until noon.  Prizes will be given for most fish, largest fish and smallest fish.  Activities take place at the cove below the beach.  Contact Lisa Deavers at 1-800-325-0057 or
