Highlands High School “We the People” team has added a fifth consecutive win to its legacy of state competition victories. The team won the “We the People: Citizens and the Constitution” State Championship on Feb. 16. The Highlands students will represent Kentucky in the national finals in Washington, D.C. April 24-28.

More than 1,200 students from all 50 states and the District of Columbia will compete in the competition. The primary goal of We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution is to promote civic competence and responsibility among the nation’s elementary and secondary students.  What makes the program so successful is the design of its instructional program, including its innovative culminating activity.

The national competition involves students testifying in a mock congressional hearing format. Students are asked to prepare formal statements and respond to inquiries from a panel of judges requiring application of relevant and applicable provisions of the U.S. Constitution.
