Lawyer Sanders says eastern Kentucky coal prices remain steady on spot market, closing week of October 10, 2008 at $133 per short ton.

According to the Federal Energy Information Administration, the current spot market price for a short ton of central Appalachian coal for the week ending October 10, 2008 was $133. Coal prices has remained fairly steady over the last couple of weeks, but have fallen from a high of around $140 per ton on the spot market.

In short, coal remains black gold in Kentucky.
